I'm riding 50 km to be a champion for children

Please support me in riding for a purpose!

Thanks for taking the time to read my story!

At the start of September(2021), I didn’t own a bike and had not ridden one for over 25years (as a kid it was just not my jam and I never thought I’d be ever want to ride).

Last year I had a nasty knee injury (ACL tear) and after surgery I had to do a lot of cycling for rehab at the gym, and it planted a seed of wanting to get on a real bike.

My husband got me a bike in mid September, and I got on and realised I’m good to go without training wheels! Breaking through the fear and mental resistance is definitely something!

I saw this fundraiser come up, and as a longtime financial supporter of Bernardos, I realised that my new-found-skill can have a bigger purpose.

Thousands of Australian children are living at risk of abuse and violence in their homes.

I cry for every heartbreaking story that I hear, and my heart aches knowing that there are more stories that we just don’t hear about, and children suffering right now. Knowing how much my 2 and 4 year olds are just so innocent and so precious, and how much they thrive on love, and how hurt they are even by just by me raising my voice in a moment of frustration, I just can’t bare knowing that there are children that are victims of violence, neglect and abuse from the people that are meant to be their safe place.

I always want to take these children home and love them, but as I don’t have the capacity to do it myself,  I want to support those who do.

That’s why I’m taking on The Champions Ride, so that Barnardos Australia can replace fear and danger with freedom and safety.

I’ll be cycling during October, to raise money to help protect kids at risk.

I’ve set a modest goal, which a month ago seemed like an impossible feat, but after my total of 8km training, I believe I can reach my goal and hopefully beat it!

Please support me by making a tax-deductible donation to Barnardos Australia. Together we can be champions for a safe childhood.

My Updates

I did it!

Thursday 18th Nov
31/10 I rode my final 5km to hit the target of 50km for the month! I still can’t believe that after basically a life time of being a person that “can’t ride a bike” to doing 50km in a few weeks! Really shows that when there is a will, there is a way! I’m really touched by all the generous support! You pushed me through that initial fear, and now I’m calm and confident. Good Karma to you!

Thank you!

Squeezed in a morning ride

Thursday 21st Oct
Unforeseen circumstances.
Childcare is closed due to positive cases.
We went close contacts and tested negative but not much time for anything this week.
The hubby minded the juniors this morning so I could go out. We explained to them that mummy is going for a ride to help children who don’t have loving homes. They were very concerned for the children and were supporting of my efforts.

I thought I had turned on Strava but didn’t and only realised when I turned around so hopefully I can still capture the full distance

Seizing the opportunity

Meeting cancelled. Sun is shining. Storms are coming. Jumped on the bike and did 8km. Relieved that I’m half way to the goal, half way through the month

Making in roads

Tuesday 5th Oct
Yesterday I did my first challenge ride. 11.5km! (Though I did forget to turn on my app for about 500m 🤦🏽‍♀️)
I left when it was sunny with a nasty black cloud looming, and hoping for the best from Melbourne weather, which never fails to disappoint.
I ended up wet riding into 90kmph wind gusts… not ideal. “Doing it for the kids” was my mantra.
The silver lining was that I bumped into a friend and her gorgeous baby Charlie in the shelter when the conditions got to unbearable. Bonus catch up!

I’m still surprised at myself that I’m… actually riding a bike!

Training for the challenge

Thursday 30th Sep
So Sunday 26/9, I did my first bike ride in 25years.
I did 8km in 50min, which my husband said is nothing to write home about… this is where I say compare yourself to yourself not to others. So for me 8km is amazing! As will be the 50km+ that I’m going to ride in October, and all your support to encourage me to break my own boundaries, recover my knee injury, and help me raise funds for a cause I’m deeply passionate about.
